A Sense of Place: Heathercombe

One of the joys of the summer in Devon is visiting the gardens that are open to the public through the National Garden Scheme. Over the years, we have explored many hidden treasures that are being lovingly cared for by their owners. This year, we made it to Heathercombe, located in a secluded valley near Hound Tor on Dartmoor.

Continuing my 'sense of place' project, I noted down the key words about the garden from the website before our visit, with the aim of generating images for these aspects. It mentions woodland, streams, bluebells (too late for daffodils), azaleas and rhododendrons, apple blossom in the orchard and fern gardens. Lots to excite my photography brain!

The weather was very kind which meant that we comfortably spent several hours just wandering through the garden, pausing to sit at the many places offered, and experimenting with my photography. But in my quest to limit myself to about 10 images to capture the sense of a place, here are my impressions of the day:
